ABRACADABRA Touring Exhibition

MAGIC IS ALL AROUND US

Say the word. Turn the card. Follow the illusion. What happens next?

ABRACADABRA is a touring exhibition about our enduring fascination with magic — from ancient symbols, spells and superstition to stage illusion, cinema, science and the extraordinary things we still don’t fully understand.

But this isn’t an exhibition where visitors simply stand back and watch.

ABRACADABRA invites them to have a go.

A collection of self-working magic tricks, optical illusions and visual puzzles gives visitors the opportunity to test their senses, question what they see and experience that wonderful moment when something seemingly impossible happens right in front of them.

Why do we believe in magic?

Throughout history, people have looked for explanations for the things they couldn’t understand.

Words have been given magical powers. Symbols have been used to protect, predict and persuade. Fortune-tellers have claimed to reveal the future. Illusionists have learned how to make the impossible appear possible.

And sometimes, the distinction between magic and reality becomes surprisingly blurred.

Cinema can make us believe in impossible worlds. Technology can perform feats that would once have seemed supernatural. Science can reveal phenomena so extraordinary that, without understanding how they work, they might easily be mistaken for magic.

From abracadabra to aha!

The exhibition explores the fascinating connections between magic, language, belief, perception, science and popular culture.

Visitors can discover where magical words and symbols came from, explore the history of illusion and superstition, and encounter some of the techniques used to manipulate what we see and believe.

Then they can put their own perceptions to the test.

Can you trust your eyes?
Can you predict what will happen?
Can you work out the trick?

Perhaps the most magical part of the exhibition is discovering just how easily our own minds can be fooled.

An exhibition that works its magic on audiences

ABRACADABRA has been conceived as an engaging, educational and highly adaptable temporary exhibition suitable for museums, galleries, visitor attractions, libraries and cultural venues.

Its combination of fascinating stories, hands-on experiences, visual illusions and accessible interpretation gives families, schools and curious adults plenty to explore — and plenty to talk about.

It can be scaled to suit both small gallery spaces and major temporary exhibition venues, making it an unusually flexible addition to a museum programme.

ABRACADABRA

Where curiosity meets illusion, belief meets perception, and visitors discover that sometimes the most extraordinary magic is already happening in their own minds.

A spectacular, successful, engaging and educational temporary touring exhibition, adaptable to both small and large venues.

“A beautifully crafted stimulating and inspiring exhibition”

The remarkable Abracadabra touring exhibition combines a collection of magical props, spells and Hocus Pocus in one fascinating display to explore the resurgence of Magic and superstition within movies, TV and popular culture. These items are typically locked away from view – but we bring them together for a spectacular, successful, engaging and educational temporary touring exhibition adaptable to small and large venues.
Abracadabra features magic spells and fascinating objects – magicians ancient and modern, from scrying mirrors to fortune-teller’s props and voodoo dolls. Witches and wizards, alchemists and medicine-men to the Magic of the mind in literature and movies, will all be revealed. The mystical allure of gazing at stars and planets in ancient storytelling laid the groundwork for centuries of astronomical exploration, driving curiosity and inspiring the birth of modern astronomy. The world is full of Magic. Not only in fiction and the incredible feats of stage conjurers and escape artists but in the beliefs, rituals and cultural practices of people around the world.
