EVERY DAY’S A DOODLEDAY
What happens when artists, celebrities, designers and cultural icons put pen to paper without worrying about the finished picture?
The answer is Doodles — a wonderfully unexpected touring exhibition that brings together original drawings and sketches by celebrated artists, designers and people of celebrity status.
Doodling is perhaps the most democratic form of creativity. It can happen in the margin of a notebook, on the back of an envelope, during a telephone call or simply because an idea suddenly appears.
But sometimes, the hand behind the doodle is rather more interesting.
Famous names. Unexpected drawings.
In this eclectic collection, the worlds of fine art, illustration, fashion, popular culture and celebrity collide.
Uri Geller’s fascinating UFO-inspired vision sits alongside the work of contemporary artist Peter Howson. Original works by André Derain, founder of the Fauvist movement, and ink drawings by Émile Bernard, friend and contemporary of Van Gogh and Gauguin, share gallery space with something altogether more familiar — illustrations of SpongeBob SquarePants and Scooby-Doo.
It’s a deliberately unconventional gathering.
And that’s the fun of it.
A doodle doesn’t have to fit neatly into an art movement, a museum collection or a category. It simply gives us a glimpse into the imagination of the person holding the pen.
Look closely. Who’s been doodling?
Among the exhibition highlights are:
- Philip Somerville, designer to Queen Elizabeth II
- Rodney Matthews, creator of extraordinary fantasy worlds
- Twiggy, whose self-portrait reveals a more personal side of an iconic face
- Bestall, whose illustrations helped define the much-loved world of Rupert Bear
- André Derain, one of the founders of Fauvism
- Émile Bernard, whose artistic story is intertwined with Van Gogh and Gauguin
- Peter Howson, one of Scotland’s best-known contemporary artists
- Uri Geller, offering his own extraordinary vision of the UFO
A little art. A little celebrity. A lot of curiosity.
Doodles invites visitors to look at creativity from a different angle.
There are no grand gestures required. No blank canvas. No expectation of creating a masterpiece.
Just a line, an idea, a character, a face, a thought.
And perhaps that’s why doodles can be so revealing. They show us what happens when creativity is allowed to wander.
And everyone can doodle
The exhibition offers an easy opportunity for visitors to join in.
Give them a piece of paper and a pencil and ask:
What would you doodle if nobody was judging?
Because perhaps the most surprising thing about Doodles is discovering that the distance between a world-famous artist and the person sitting beside you with a biro isn’t quite as great as we imagine.
Doodles — where great names, curious minds and spontaneous creativity meet.
