For a few moments, a costume becomes a character. A prop becomes part of a story. A set becomes another world.
Then filming ends.
In many cases, costumes are dismantled or disposed of, sets disappear, and props are never seen again. Increasingly, digital technology can create entire characters, environments and objects that never physically existed at all.
That’s what makes the surviving pieces so fascinating.
SCREEN ENCOUNTERS brings some of that disappearing physical history back into the real world.

This spectacular touring exhibition brings together original costumes, props and production artefacts from film and television — physical objects that once helped turn imagination into something audiences could see, believe and remember.
From the historical worlds of Outlander and The Great, to fantasy, science fiction and adventure productions including The School for Good and Evil, Planet of the Apes, Red Dwarf, The Chronicles of Riddick and Heart of Stone, SCREEN ENCOUNTERS brings together an eclectic collection of objects from productions that have captured audiences around the world.
These aren’t images of movie magic.
They’re the real things.
The costume worn by a character.
The prop held in their hands.
The physical object created to make an imaginary world believable.
And seeing them up close changes the experience completely.

Warnambool’s local economy was given an injection of over a million dollars when people came to this beachside town from far and wide to take advantage of this unique opportunity to see, first-hand, a collection of props and costumes from their favourite films and T.V. shows in the Sci-Fi Encounter Exhibition (previously Alien Invasion.)

A Monster Hit at Torquay Museum
A monster hit at Torquay Museum, breaking all visitor records – up to 1000 visitors per day!
“Not only has the exhibition been a spectacular stand-alone success in attracting visitors,” says Carl Smith of Torquay Museum, “but it has also increased interest in our static collections and improved our customer loyalty – a vital aspect of the long-term health of the museum.”
Torquay Museum’s visitor numbers were launched into orbit when it exceeded its yearly visitor target in just ten weeks. Nineteen thousand visitors came through the museum which expected to see 5,000 in the whole of year.
On the busiest day, over 1,000 visitors came to see the display of creatures, props and costumes from landmark and popular science fiction films and television series. Previously, the highest number of visitors the museum attracted in a day was 300.
